Abortion and freedom from nature

I’ve been skulking around various blogs on bioethical issues recently, and I came across this geme from the Christian blog ‘Of Virtue and Life’:

What I am arguing [...] is that pregnancy is natural and by saying abortion helps in the liberation of women, it is essentially saying that abortion helps liberate women from nature – which is completely off the wall.
The bottom line for the entire situation is that abortion really doesn’t help in women’s liberation. Having a child doesn’t lower a woman or make her subservient to a man – it is simply a natural process. How is it liberating to go against what is natural? (emphasis mine)

It is that final question that I italicised that I wish to discuss in this post, as in my opinion it can be very, very liberating to go against what is natural. It is exceedingly liberating to be free from nature, and being free from natural limitations on our body and mind. Humans are more liberated now that death does not come so early in life, and we would be most liberated if in the future death existed only as a choice and was never forced upon us by natural causes. Other examples of natural things from which we may want to be liberated include the natural human tendency to put on weight or the natural human limitations on memory or even the fact that humans are not naturally born with wings. But many other natural aspects of everyday life are not entirely pleasant, such as pregnancy and childbirth.
But first I wish to reinforce the fact that there is nothing inherently good about what is natural. To think so would be the fallacy of ‘appeal to nature’, which is essentially wishful thinking in reverse (wishful thinking is where you think what should be is what will be, and the ‘appeal to nature’ fallacy is where you think what is is also what ought to be). You cannot switch between an is and an ought, as the former is a statement of fact and the latter is a statement of value.
Even from a Christian perspective, I cannot see how one could assume what is natural is also what is good. While it is the Christian belief that the nature of reality was created by a benevolent God, apparently the free will of a couple of humans brought sin which corrupted the world, and therefore not everything we see in nature can be assumed to be good (though God clearly let sin corrupt the world and therefore such corruption was obliviously not against the will of a benevolent God, which brings too many theodical issues for this post).
But getting back to the topic, this means we cannot assume that pregnancy and childbirth are good simply because they are natural.
Furthermore, I think there is good arguments to suggest that many, albeit natural, aspects of pregnancy and childbirth are very bad. Very few women choose a natural childbirth because the options of drug-assistance or surgical deliveries provide much more appealing unnatural childbirths. Many women dislike the effects pregnancy has on their body, both during pregnancy and after childbirth, and are eager to return to their pre-pregnancy figures. And even after childbirth, many things about children are not particularly desirable, such as incessant crying and the cost of raising them. While a strong maternal desire and love of children drives many women to endure these distasteful aspects of pregnancy, I think it stands to reason that the process could be much improved by liberating women from the natural downsides to having children.
In addition to the above-mentioned natural but undesirable aspects of pregnancy,  the most important natural aspect from which we try to liberate ourselves is the choice to go through the whole pregnancy process at all. It’s natural that heterosexual sex between fertile humans can result in pregnancy, but the vast majority of humans (in the first world, at least) take measures to avoid this natural consequence of sex, though most contraceptives are not foolproof. Because of this (and because of the unfortunate – and likely natural – occurrence of rape) pregnancy is not always consensual, a woman can only have complete control over whether she goes through pregnancy and childbirth if she can opt out of the process at any time. So the most liberating scenario for a woman is total and unrestricted access to abortion regardless of her stage of pregnancy.
So I think we can conclude that women are indeed liberated by having the option to abort. And men too can be liberated by abortion, as couples who do not wish to have children are therefore able to ensure they remain childless. That pregnancy and childbirth are natural does nothing to change this, as the freedom to liberate ourselves from nature is freedom nonetheless. Nobody is truly free if they are a slave to nature.

Making a real-world Pandora

While many movie-goers were saddened as they left the world of Pandora and came back to Earth, I was not. Instead, as I left the cinema after seeing James Cameron’s Avatar, I was instead happily musing about how the beautiful flora and fauna of Pandora could be created. For real. Here, on Earth.

For me, I was most amazed by the prevalence of bioluminescence among the plants, and even animals, of Pandora. The bioluminescence is especially obvious with the Trees of Souls and Tree of Voices, but nearly all plants and fungi seem to have bioluminescent properties. Bioluminescence is obvious in some Pandoran insects and lizards, and the sentient Na’vi also have lines of blue photophores on their skin.

Fortunately, bioluminescence is not something entirely alien. Many organisms on our own planet are also bioluminescent, though most bioluminescent animals live in the deep ocean (though exceptions, such as glowworms and fireflies, are well-known). Bioluminescence has evolved in insects, molluscs (especially squid), fish, jellyfish, fungi, plankton and bacteria, but to my knowledge no naturally bioluminescent plant species exist on Earth.
I had to say ‘naturally’  in the last sentence of the above paragraph because in recent times, many animals and plants have been genetically engineered to express the firefly (Photinus pyralis) enzyme called luciferase. This enzyme, in the presence of its substrate (luciferin) produces a yellow-green bioluminescence. There are also many other natural and mutated enzymes, allowing for bioluminescence with colours of red , orange, yellow, green, blue and even violet.

With advances in the knowledge of the chemistry and biology of bioluminescence, genetically-engineered bioluminescent plants and animals may become as commonplace on Earth as on Pandora. As very efficient solar-powered lights (in addition to being very attractive), gardens might be lit by the very plants that inhabit them. We might make animals that can use bioluminescence as a signal, like pets that literally light up when they see their owner. The bioluminescent magic seen in Avatar is entirely feasible!
Na’vi are human-like in appearance, but are much taller (almost 3m tall) and have some alien characteristics – blue striped skin, pointy and mobile pinna (external part of the ear), catlike tails and (with the exception of the avatars) only four digits on their hands and feet. They also have larger (and yellow) eyes compared to human proportions, flatter noses and slimmer physiques. It’s also mentioned in the film that the Na’vi are stronger and have hardier bones. Each of these characteristics is at least biologically plausible, and so it might be possible to turn a human into something resembling very closely a Na’vi.
Some humans have traits that make them more Na’vi-like than others, and with research the genetic reasons for this difference could yield ways to make a human into a Na’vi. Pituitary gigantism (causing greatly increased growth hormone) can produce humans with heights of up to 2.7m, and it’s possible that a similar pathway can be used for genetic enhancement of skeletal height without the associated health issues of gigantism. Enhancement of bone strength might also solve some of these health problems, and I foresee that stronger bones and muscles will be a desirable trait for future human enhancement (and therefore will be well-researched). Finally, the fact that some humans naturally have very slender physiques suggest the trait might be able to be genetically engineered, and narrow waists, though historically achieved through the use of corsets, should also prove amenable to genetic modification.

Inspiration for more alien features of the Na’vi was found in the animals of Earth, and perhaps we might be able to borrow from these animals genomes. As the very distant ancestors of humans had a tail, restoring one should prove relatively simple also. Animals with mobile pointed pinna exist and are well known (such as the common cat), so with some research, humans could be engineered to have similar. Reducing the number of digits might be more difficult, as five digits is the normal for most, but fortunately not all, limbed vertebrates (and, as the avatars still had five digits, reducing digits to four might not be desirable). Blue skin should be possible, though blue pigment molecules are rare, but one could perhaps be engineered and human skin engineered to produce it instead of the red and brown pigment molecules pheomelanin and eumelanin). Similarly for yellow iris pigmentation (either that, or contact lenses).
Creating the other animals of Pandora, however, might prove more difficult. The other animals seem to mostly be hexapods; Direhorses, Ikran, Thanator and Titanothere all have six legs. The base body plan for limbed vertebrates on Earth is four limbs, and there are no six-limbed vertebrates from which any inspiration can be drawn. Nonetheless, there is nothing biologically implausible about hexapodal mammals and reptiles, so one day such creatures could be created.
The Ikran (also known as Mountain Banshee) could prove the most problematic to engineer. Earth’s gravity is greater than that of Pandora, and the musculature required for powered flight is therefore much greater (and heavier). Because of this, flying creatures on Earth are seldom very large, with the largest ever to exist (Argentavis) weighing only around 100kg (certainly less than the mass of a Na’vi) and a wingspan of 6-8m (the Ikran wingspan is 14m). Though with great re-engineering of muscle tissue, strong but light muscles could circumvent this issue. But don’t even get me started on a Toruk.
So, finally I want to mention perhaps the most imaginative aspect of Pandoran biology – the entire ecosystem of Pandora is seemingly connected into one super-consciousness, termed Eywa. The roots of plants carry signals from one tree to another, and animals (including the Na’vi) have a ‘queue’ (or many queues) extending from the back of their neck, which they can use to connect to other animals (allowing sensory and motor systems to merge) or to certain plants, like the Tree of Souls and Tree of Voices, allowing memories to be accessed and other functions.

An analogy is drawn by Dr Augustine between the network of plants on Pandora and a network of neurons in a brain. While this might be valid in terms of numbers of connections, the electrochemical signals used by neurons only travel at a maximum velocity of 120m/s. If the network of Pandora uses similar mechanisms, it would take many minutes for signals to propagate across even a small section of forest and perhaps hours to reach the entire landmass. This is far too slow to produce any coherent or conscious thought. I’m sure there’s some sort of fantastical explanation, as I’ve heard talk of psionic energy or something similarly unreal, allowing for light-speed communication. That might also explain how the animals of Pandora were connected to this network at all times without being tethered to a tree (but simultaneously makes the queue rather redundant as a form of communication).
Anyway, the biological plausibility of interfacing two animals with a queue together is much higher. The queue seems to extend from the base of the head, near the brainstem, which makes it another extension to the central nervous system, secondary to the spinal cord (it occurs to me that extending the spinal cord into the tail, and using that as a queue, might be easier to engineer). This could feasibly allow any motor signals to be sent via either the spinal cord or the queue depending on what is being controlled (e.g. the Na’vi’s hands or the Ikran’s wings), and for any sensory information to be relayed from the brain to the other organism (e.g. the Ikran’s wings to the Na’vi’s brain). A very strong Tsahaylu (connection) between two Na’vi is said to occur during mating. While I’m sure feeling what your mate does and influencing their actions would, as a reciprocal form of communication, lead to totally awesome lovemaking, I doubt that this would lead to any merging of consciousness, as this distances between the brains would be too great for coherent thoughts. Nonetheless, perhaps sharing of memories and feelings could occur, though perhaps not complete thoughts.
I don’t think it will be possible to recreate every aspect of Pandora in the near future. Floating mountains would likely be a significant geoengineering problem for many years to come. And low gravity
I think the sadness and even weltschmerz experienced by those fans of Avatar is entirely justified, but being dissatisfied with reality is nothing new to transhumanists. But I just want to say this: if you want to live in a world like Pandora, then why not go ahead and make this world (or a small section of it) just like it! If you want to be a Na’vi, then why not engineer yourself to be just like one! Go study biology: plant and animal genetic engineering, bioluminescence, biomechanics, neuroscience and so on. Are you prepared to work toward making a better planet, a better ecosystem, and better people?

30 Days of Night Vampires are Scary Predators

What comes to mind when someone says “Vampire”?
Throughout the world there have been all sorts of undead that feed off the blood of the living. Most vampires are not some romantic version of the undead a la Brad Pitt, Frank Langella, Bela Lugosi or even Kate Beckinsale. Vampires have become docile and over-eroticized in the past twenty years with books from Anne Rice and Laurell K. Hamilton. Don’t get me wrong I love the humanization of the vampire and the sexual vampire has something because I think every single person deep down inside of them wishes they could give themselves to a lover forever. (Who could ever forget the 80’s The Hunger.) But in the last twenty years vampire movies, books and storylines have not grabbed me by the throat. (I know bad joke.) Classics like 1922’s Nosferatu where something that was not human was on the screen. Truly undead. Is there any hope for Hollywood’s version of the bloodsucking undead? I think there is and that hope comes in the form of a story that started as a comic book that came out in 2002 from IDW and the minds of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith called 30 Days of Night.
Wish to know what it is to see vampires at their rawest form of true predator of the food chain? Then I suggest you pick up a copy of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith’s 30 Days of Night. This award-nominated comic book/graphic novel not only captured the intensity of the undead as something not to be admired, but feared for what they are – killers of humans. Steve Niles is also one of the unique people in the comic/entertainment industry; he not only reinvented the horror genre of the old EC days before the comic codes ruined comics till the 1980’s, but, literally bringing horror comics back from the dead. (Darn my bad jokes), Niles opened the minds of the public to the idea that vampires are not cute and lovable a la Anne Rice and Bram Stoker’s. He proved that they are what they are Top Predatory beings. (Truly belonging to the night.) Like Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller and Alan Moore, he loves what he does and holds his storyline up for the world to see.
30 Days of Night is a story of what happens when a gang of vampires decide to go for a road trip to the one place they can truly enjoy. A small Alaskan village called Barrow, where it is truly night for long periods. And what do vampires do on a vacation? They eat like people when they go on a vacation or a cruise and with no fear of a diet. The anti-hero in this story is Sheriff Eben Olemaun and his Deputy/wife Stella. They are the last line of defense for the survivors of Barrow. The people are also just trying to survive on wits and survival instincts. The writing and the artwork in this comic/graphic novel is to be admired. Sort of water color pencil scratches that make you take note of how harsh the story really is. These vampires are filled with razor sharp teeth that not only pierce the skin but rip flesh from any portion of your body. As a reader you get the feeling of a watching an animal eating. No fine finesse of a dribble of blood from a fang. But an all out blood fest. Won’t tell you too much more except there is a subplot that links these new vampires to New Orleans. (A city infested by vampires?)
But since the inception of this book into our culture, it has even crossed the lines of entertainment. I am happy to say that 30 Days of Night is about to hit the big screen. With this movie being Directed by David Slade (Hard Candy) and produced by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead series and that Spiderman series), it should at least be a thrill ride. The movie Stars Josh Harnett as Sheriff Oleson (Notice the change of name here since I do not think Josh can pass for a native Inuit from Alaska.) I have to admit that, although I am also critical of his acting skills in his earlier films, there are a couple of movies that I truly liked Josh Hartnett in. In Sin City as The Hitman and in Lucky Number Slevin, he is coming into his own.
These are two items which will keep me happy until I see the movie. The interactive website and a little item called Fearnet on demand. The 30 Days of Night website will not only get you into the mood for this upcoming movie with downloads and an interactive game and bios of the director, actors and producers, but, as with all good movie webpages, it has great promotions and giveaways.
The interactive game on the website is something to play if you have the proper flash loaded on your computer. This game is about you being the sheriff and armed with only a shotgun you must kill as many of the new version vampires with the razor teeth as possible before they tear you apart. I have to admit over all I did okay with the game until they started assaulting me with seven vampires at a time. Remember if you play the game to always reload as soon as you can. Or you can become a bloody wet spot on the screen like I did.
Fearnet.com and Fearnet on Demand on your cable have something that will help you get prepared for 30 Days of Night. They have a short movie series called Blood Trails based on the New Orleans vampire hunter from 30 Days of Night I highly recommend this little series to get you ready for the movie. Not only did they perk my interest to the story line of the movie to come. But it answered some questions I had about the graphic novel.
I also am unhappy to admit it, but I will not be able to see the movie until Oct 19th like the rest of you. But I will be sending my review of it in as soon as I do.

Vampire Con Panel and Photography

It is no secret that I love the vampire genre. I received Honors at Wesleyan University for my thesis on vampire legends as a paradigm for aggressive human sexuality. And I would like the record to show that I will be speaking on exactly that topic this weekend at Vampire Con in Hollywood. I’ll be taking part in the panel programming Sunday afternoon, after the movie nights, and before Vampirella’s Ball (more on this in a moment.) I’m excited that Wendi Mirabella and Lotti Pharriss Knowles have put Vampire-Con together.
The panel I am on is called Hot-Blooded: Vampires & Sexuality and is at 1pm at the Henry Fonda Theater on Hollywood Blvd. It will be moderated by David J. Skal, Author of Hollywood Gothic and V Is For Vampire: The A-Z Guide Of Everything Undead. I’m especially excited that Pam Keesey, who I’m looking forward to catching up with will be on the panel. She is the editor of multiple anthologies of lesbian vampire tales, Women Who Run with the Werewolves: Tales of Blood, Lust, and Metamorphosis, and Vamps: An Illustrated History of the Femme Fatale. Pam Keesey has a very engaging personality, has published yours truly, and once gave me a tour of Forrest Ackerman’s memorabilia collection. Other panelists are Hal Bodner, author of Bite Club: A West Hollywood Vampire Tale, filmmaker Fred Olen Ray from The Lair, actress Celeste Yarnall, best known at a vamp convention for her role in The Velvet Vampire, but who has appeared in everything from Melrose Place to Star Trek, and best-selling author, comic book writer, and filmmaker Donald F. Glut who recently directed the Elizabeth Bathory-inspired movie Blood Scarab. And we’ll be talking about vampire sex.
That evening, at the same venue, from 8:30pm to 1am, there will be Vampirella’s Ball. The music will be provided by DJ Xian and DJ Gary Calamar, music supervisor of HBO’s True Blood and KCRW radio DJ. Vampire Con describes the appropriate attire saying, “Costumes are thoroughly encouraged – Vampires, Victorian, Edwardian, Steampunk, Bohemian, Tribal, Gypsy.”
Forrest Black and I will have a location studio set up to photograph people involved in the event, revelers who most exemplify the themes of the event, and our close personal friends (i.e. not everyone, but photographic subjects best for doing press coverage on Vampire Con.) KUBURAN UNTUK WISATA DI RUMANIA

Biasanya jika kita mendengar kata kuburan, telinga dan hati kita merespon dengan ngeri. Pasti ada nuansa menyeramkan dan kesedihan yang ditonjolkan di situ. Kematian merupakan jalan menuju kepada kekekalan dan sangat ditakuti oleh orang-orang.

Kuburanlah merupakan peristirahatan badani untuk jenazah. Dan nuansa ngeri sudah distempelkan di sana.

Tapi bagaimana dengan kuburan yang ada di utara Rumania ini? Kuburan dengan nama Merry Cemetery of Sapanta yang terletak di setelah utara Rumania tidak menimbulkan aroma angker. Bahkan jauh dari kesan menyeramkan, kuburan ini bahkan terdengar menyenangkan. Tapi tentunya bukan bagi jenazah, tapi
bagi orang-orang yang berkunjung. Itulah sebabnya, Merry Cemetery of Sapanta merupakan salah satu daya tarik pariwisata orang-orang berkunjung ke sana. Bukan sekedar ziarah, tapi WISATA.

TANJUNG BERUKANG,TEMPAT DIMANA BANYAK MAHKLUK GAIB DAN MENIMBULKAN PENYAKIT ANEH

NAMA Tanjung Berukang diambil dari nama ikan yang berada di sungai itu. Pada tahun 60-an sesepuh desa bernama Hj Mida, menjadikan nama ikan itu menjadi nama tempat. Diceritakan oleh generasi ke tiga bernama Samsudin (65), yang pertama mendiami wilayah pesisir itu adalah keluarga Hj Mida. Keluarga yang berjumlah 7 orang itu adalah pelarian dari Makassar karena tragedi G30S/PKI sekitar tahun 60-an silam. Untuk mencari keselamatan, akhirnya 7 orang yang tergabung dalam satu keluarga itu memutuskan untuk tinggal di pesisir pantai itu dan bekerja sebagai nelayan. "Karena dulu di Makasar rusuh masalah PKI, makanaya nenek saya sekeluarga dengan menggunakan kapal, lari dari Makasar dan terdampar di sini," ungkap Samsudin menceritakan tentang sejarah Tanjung Berukang.

Sekitar 20 tahun generasi pertama hingga generasi ke tiga menempati tanjung yang berada di selatan Tanjung Berukang. Kemudian seluruh warga yang berjumlah 40 jiwa itu memutuskan untuk pindah ke kawasan sebelah. Perpindahan itu bukan tanpa sebab dan alasan. Menurut penuturan warga sekitar, daerah yang dulu dihuni sangat angker. Selain sering dihantui makhluk gaib, warga juga sering terjangkit penyakit misterius. Sehingga seluruh warga memutuskan untuk pindah ke Salok Luang (Bahasa Bugis) atau dalam bahasa Indonesia nya adalah sungai dalam yang saat ini dinamai Tanjung Berukang.

"Seingat saya, seluruh keluarga kami pindah ke sini (Tanjung Berukang, Red) pada tahun 1982. Waktu itu kondisi desa sangat menyeramkan. Selain angker hampir setiap hari ada yang kena penyakit aneh, makanya nenek memutuskan untuk pindah," tuturnya.

Hingga saat ini Tanjung Berukang masih terkenal wilayah yang cukup angker. Walaupun tak separah dulu, namun warga yang tinggal di kawasan tersebut mengaku masih kerap diganggu semacam mahluk halus yang konon katanya penunggu wilayah tersebut.

Bahkan tak jarang korban jiwa berjatuhan akibat sejumlah penyakit aneh yang menyerang warga sekitar.  "Kalau di sini enggak boleh macam-macam, karena wilayah ini masih terkenal mistis. Beberapa orang sudah pernah meninggal karena penyakit aneh yang tak bisa disembuhkan," ujar Sodikin, salah seorang warga sekitar pada Sapos.

Hingga saat ini penyakit tersebut masih miterius. Pembengkakan pada leher yang terjadi secara tiba-tiba membuat sejumlah warga tak mampu hidup lama. Bahkan ada yang pernah ditangani oleh tim medis di satu rumah sakit di Samarinda, namun menurut diagnosa kedokteran korban tak terkena penyakit, hanya semacam terjadi penyempitan saluran pernapasan karena sebuah cekikan.

"Dulu ada yang sempat dibawa ke rumah sakit, tapi kata dokter korban hanya mengalami penyempitan saluran pernapasan karena cekikan. Itu kan aneh. Padahal beberapa jam sebelumnya kondisi si korban baik-baik saja. Tapi saat ditemukan di empang (tambak, Red) kondisinya sudah kejang-kejang," jelas Sodikin.

Tanjung Berukang memang masih menjadi wilayah pesisir yang misterius. Hingga saat ini masih belum ada yang mengetahui penyakit jenis penyakit apa yang menghantui warga dan bagaimana cara menaggulanginya

Supreme Court: Administration Can Continue To Enforce DADT For Now

The Supreme Court this afternoon declined to halt the Obama Administration's enforcement of the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy while an appeals courts decides whether to uphold a lower court ruling that the policy is unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court denied without comment the Log Cain Republicans' request to vacate the stay issued by the Ninth Circuit Court Of Appeals on November 9, 2010. That stay stopped Judge Virginia Phillips' October injunction against enforcing DADT from going into full effect following her ruling that the policy is unconstitutional.

The Administration is pushing Congress to pass legislation in the lame duck session to allow it to end DADT after the Pentagon issues a report on how the end of the ban against openly gay and bisexual people serving in the military. Sources report that the survey conducted by the Pentagon, which drew fire last summer, shows that most members of the military either think an end to the ban will have little or a positive effect.

Eris: Satu pesawat katai sedikit aneh

NUKLIR BISA SELAMATKAN BUMI DARI TABRAKAN ASTEROID PADA TAHUN 2013

"Jika manusia tak punya waktu banyak, nuklir mungkin satu-satunya penyelamat kita."

VIVAnews - Saat asteroid besar bersiap menghujam Bumi 50 tahun mendatang, sebuah bom nulir diluncurkan untuk membuat batu luar angkasa itu hancur berkeping. Itu adegan yang sangat menarik film Hollywood.

Itu bisa jadi nyata. Sebab, para ilmuwan mengatakan bom nuklir memang bisa jadi solusi penyelamatan Bumi.

Namun, ada beberapa prasyarat yang harus dipenuhi. Yakni, asteroid harus jadi ancaman yang nyata bagi Bumi dalam jangka waktu yang relatif singkat -- untuk justifikasi pilihan ekstrim ini. Apalagi, tambah ilmuwan, puing-puing ledakan asteroid yang dibom nuklir bisa jadi bahaya.

David Dearborn, fisikawan Laboratorium Nasional Lawrence Livermore, California mendukung bom nuklir sebagai salah satu alternatif terbaik menghindarkan malapetaka Bumi.

"Bom nuklir adalah bom terkuat yang kita ketahui. Ini 3 juta kali lebih efisien daripada bom kimia. Masalahnya, adalah bagaimana untuk menggunakannya," kata dia, seperti dimuat laman Space.com, 25 Juni 2010.

Apalagi, dengan nuklir, kita bisa membawa sumber energi luar biasa ke laur angkasa dalam kapasitas yang kecil.

Namun, masalah tak berakhir dengan hanya meledakkan asteroid. Ancaman lain masih ada -- puing-puing asteroid.

Kata Dearborn, penting untuk memperhitungkan sedemikian rupa, hingga hanya sebagian kecil puing yang mampu menembus atmosfer.

Dearborn membuat simulasi untuk mengetahui jumlah energi dan waktu yang efektif untuk mengalihkan asteroid dan puing-puing yang menyebar agar tak menabrak Bumi.

Kata dia, memecah asteroid sepanjang 270 meter dengan 300 kiloton sumber energi dapat dilakukan selama 15 hari, dengan jarak lebih dari 100 juta mil dari Bumi.

"Di luar orbit Bulan. Itu berarti Bumi akan baik-baik saja. Dipastikan 97 persen material tidak menuju Bumi."

Laboratorium Universitas California saat ini sedang merancang dan menguji senjata nuklir penghancur asteroid.

Dearborn yakin, ledakan nuklir bisa digunakan untuk mengubah orbit asteroid yang mengancam -- sebelum menubruk dan menciptakan bencana luar biasa bagi Bumi.

Sementara, Direktur NASA Lunar Science Institute dan astrobiologis senior lembaga antariksa AS, David Morrison mengatakan nuklir hanya efektif dalam situasi mendesak.

"Jika asteroid itu benar-benar besar dan manusia tak punya waktu banyak, nuklir mungkin satu-satunya penyelamat kita," tambah dia.

Laporan survey NASA mengungkapkan, 90 persen batu luar angkasa besar yang berpotensi mengancam Bumi telah ditemukan.

"Dalam beberapa tahun, kita bisa yakin tak ada di langit yang bisa menyebabkan kehancuran Bumi. Namun, masih ada jutaan benda langit yang cukup besar untuk menyapu bersih sebuah kota. Perlu waktu lama untuk menemukan dan mencari orbit mereka," k

Hujan Meteor

1. Hujan meteor Orionid

Hujan meteor orionid muncul tiap tahun, dan memuncak di sekitar tgl 21 okt. Hujan meteor ini sangat jelas terlihat dan tampak sampai 20 meteor hjau dan kuning tiap jamnya. Orinoid adalah nama cahaya meteor yang berada dilangit ditempat titik mereka berasal. Komet meteor bias dilihat di penjuru seluruh langit tapi garis pergerakan mereka akan selalu menunjuk ke arah cahaya. Cahaya meteor orinoid terletak di dekat konstelasi Orion. Dan hujan meteornya disebabkan oleh Komet Halley yg terkenal yg terakhir terlihat pada tahun 1986 yang orbitnya sekitar 75-76 tahunan

2. hujan meteor Perseid

Meteor Perseid adalah meteor yg mungkin bias kita lihat paling jelas dan biasanya terlihat di belahan bumi bagian utara pada saat malam di musim panas yg hangat. Terang dan banyak, perseid dikaitkan dgn komet swift-tuttle yng menakjubkan. Meteor ini tampaknya berasal dari sebuah cahaya di rasi Perseus dan terjadi ketika bumi melewati aliran meteor yang dikenal dgn nama awan perseid yg sebenarnya adalah residu dari ekor komet swift-tuttle.


Sebagian besar debu dari awan Perseid berumur ribuan tahun, walauoun ada beberapa diantaranya adalah debu muda yg menguap dari komet pada tahun 1862. hujan meteor perseid telah diamati sekitar 200 tahun dan biasanya terlihat mulai pertengahan juli dan memuncak pada tgl 12 agustus tiap tahunnya

3. Geminid meteor shower

Gambar berikut merupakan hujan meteor Geminid. Meteor ini bukan seperti meteor lain yg lahir dari sebuah komet, melainkan mereka berasal dari sebudah asteroid, yaitii sebuah planetoin berbatu di dekat bumi yg bernama Phaeton 3200. pada umumnya asteroid tdk menghasilkan debu ke angkasa dan bahkan diperkirakan asteroid ini sebelumnya adalah sebuah komet. Orbit Phaeton berbentuk elips seperti komet dan yang bahkan membawanya kedalam dekat matahari melebihi orbit merkurius.

Geminid pertama muncul 150 thn yg lalu, dan semenjak itu mereka menghujani bumi secara regular tiap tahun pada pertengahan desember. Mereka diperkirakan akan lebih banyak [ada tiap tahunnya dan hujan meteor baru2 ini telah terlihat lebih dari ratusan meteor menghiasi langit.

4. Quadrantid meteor shower

Banyak kilatan meteor yang terlihat pada gambar ini, meskipin terhalang oleh cahaya jihau aurora disebelah kanannya. Cahaya merah yang terlihat sebelah kiri merupakan cahaya pesawat astronom NASA DC-8 yang terbang diatas kanada utk meneliti hujan meteor Quadrantid. Dengan bantuan kamera khusus yg dapat menghasilkan gambar komposit yg menggabungkan eksposur singkat, para peneliti berharap dapat mengetahui dari mana hujan meteor ini berasal awalnya.

Karena kuatnya penampakan meteor ini, pada januari awal hujan meteor ini secara tentative didentifikasikan sbg planet kecil yg dinamakan planet 2003 EH1 kemungkinan juga diamati oleh astronom dari cina, jepang dan korea semenjak stgh milenuim lalupada puncak penampakannya, hujan meteor ini akan bisa dilihat kurang dari 1 jam.

Bukit salib di Kryzių Kalnas, terletak 12 km sebelah kota industri Siauliai (baca; shoo-lay) Adalah pusat ziarah di Lithuania, komplek yg berdiri diatas bukit kecil ini diisi oleh patung2 salib Kristen, tidak diketahui kapan berdirinya komplek ini, berawal dari peperangan yg menewaskan pasukan2 Lithuania akhirnya bukit ini dijadikan tujuan ziarah, sering kali pemakaman ini berencana utk di ratakan, tetapi tidak pernah berhasil, alhasil malah salib2 itu malah bertambah, selain menyeramkan tetapi mempunyai nilai artistik yg tinggikan




9. St Louis Cemetery, USA
Utk tujuan berikutnya Pemakaman Katholik yg berada di New Orleans, Louisiana ini katanya adalah komplek pemakaman tertua di dunia, pemakaman2 ini berbentuk kubah2, sebagian besar dibangun pada abad 18. Tapi hati2 kalo berwisata sendiri disini, krn tindak kriminalitasnya sangat tinggi, kalo mo berkunjung kesini harus dgn berkelompok

8. Leap Castle Oubliette, Ireland
Adalah sebuah Benteng di County offaly, Irlandia, sekitar 4 mil sebelah utara kota Roscrea, Bentang yg dibangun pada tahun 1250 ini pada tahun 1659 jatuh kepemilikan ke Darby Family, keluarga yg terkenal jahat disana, banyak orang dipenjara dan dieksekusi didalam benteng ini. Masih dilingkup benteng ini telah ditemukan sebuah 'oubliette' (seperti gbr dibawah) yang merupakan penjara bawah tanah dimana org2 dikurung dan disiksa. Ketika para pekerja yg sedang merenovasi kastil ini mereka menemukan tulang2 belulang didalam penjara bawah tanah itu, dan juga menemukan sebuah jam yg diproduksi pd tahun 1840-an dan juga mereka sering melihat penampakan Mahluk kecil bungkuk berwarna hijau disertai dgn bau mayat dan bau belerang.




7. Château de Machecoul, France
Adalah rumah bagi Gilles de Rais (1404 - 1440), seorang kesatria Breton, pendamping Joan of Arc Marsekal dari Perancis. Tetapi namanya dikenal sebagai seorang pembunuh berantai anak2 pada tahun 1434-35. Sebagian besar pembunuhan itu dilakukan di dalam rumah sebelum mereka dibunuh, terlebih dahulu di perkosa lalu dimutilasi.
Akhirnya pada tgl 26 Oktober 1440 Dia dihukum mati dgn cara digantung .
kisahnya menjadi inspirasi kesuksesan 'Bluebard' sebuah film klasik di Prancis sana.

Rumania dalam dunia keangkeran, Andapasti cuma terpikir oleh satu nama "Vlad Dracula" dgn Bran Kastil nya, tapi jgn salah kalau di Rumania sendiri Poenari Kastil lebih terkenal angker dari rumah sang Drakula itu sendiri, selain letaknya yg berdekatan tetapi juga, (konon) disinilah setiap tengah malam si Drakula itu nongkrong. Untuk sampai ke kastil ini para wisatawan harus menapaki 1500 anak tangga



5. Tana Toraja, Indonesia
Kota yang berjarak 130 km dari Makassar ini, mempunyai pemandangan alam yg sangat mengagumkan dari batu granit, hijaunya petak2 sawah dipegunungan dan juga komplek2 pemakaman yg dapat membuat bulu2 bergidik , tetapi lebih mengasyikan kalo kita dapat berwisata kesini bertepatan dgn upacara pemakaman yg biasa disebut 'Rambu tuka', Di Tana toraja mayat tidak dikubur melainkan di letakkan didalam tongkonan (rumah adat) diacara tsb juga diadakan pemotongan kerbau. selain itu juga kita dapat mengunjungi bermacam jenis pemakaman disini seperti di 'Kambira' mayat bayi di pohon, 'Batu tumonga' mayat dibatu dan rantepao mayat digoa




4. Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Italy
Katakombe adalah sebuah cara pemakaman dari bangsa Italy yg menyerahkan hidup kedalam gereja seperti biara, pastur,dan keturunannya. Katakombe pertama kali dilakukan pd thn 1599. Katakombe adalah mayat yg didehidrasi kedalam keramik yg dibentuk seperti wujud manusia aslinya, beberapa mayat dibalsem dan dicuka dan tidak sedikit mayat yg cuma ditutup oleh kaca. Katakomba resmi ditutup pd th 1880 namun krn para wisatawan terus mengunjungi, maka pada th 1920, katakombe ini resmi dibuka kembali sampai sekarang.




3. Poveglia of Venice, Italy
Ini adalah sebuah pulau dgn sejarah hampir seluruhnya diisi oleh kematian. pertama kali pulau ini ditemukan hanya untuk penderita penyakit Lepra, tetapi pada tahun 1922 dipulau ini dibangun sebuah rumah sakit jiwa banyak keangkeran terjadi seperti orang gila yg terjun bebas dari menara RS tsb, terakhir tercatat 160.000 orang yg tewas dipulau kecil ini.
